Unfortunately, a mistake was made regarding the marathon and half marathon course installation of the Reykjavik Marathon on Saturday, August 18th, 2018.
The turning point at road Sæbraut (16 km mark) was not properly executed with the consequence that the course was 213 meters too short. This has been confirmed by remeasurement of the course.
The race referee and the court of the Reykjavik Marathon, which consists of members of the Reykjavik Sports Union and the Icelandic Athletic Federation, have reached the conclusion that the final results of the marathon and half marathon shall stand. Prize winners in all distances and age groups are valid winners of the race and the Icelandic Marathon Championship. Unfortunately, the times are however not valid because the track was too short and will therefore not be entered in the Icelandic Athletic Federation track record. It is also uncertain that other races will accept the times as qualifying times for their competitions.
The Reykjavik Sports Union is deeply sorry and would like to sincerely apologize to all participants for this mistake. This year, as in recent years, a lot of ambitious effort and work was made on our behalf to make this race as good and enjoyable as possible. In light of these mistakes, we have decided to take preventive measures and increase the number of race inspectors on the race course next year to prevent this from happening again.
