The Bryndís Klara Memorial Fund

The Bryndís Klara Memorial Fund was established by the family and friends of Bryndís Klara Birgisdóttir, who died at only 17 years of age following a knife attack during Reykjavík Culture Night in August 2024.

The Fund’s mission is to reduce violence among children and young people and to support initiatives that promote safety, mental wellbeing and a more caring society. The Fund works both to support individuals and to help build lasting solutions capable of creating real and long-term impact.

The Fund’s largest undertaking is the development of Bryndísarhlíð, a new reception and support centre for children and young people who have experienced violence or trauma.

Bryndísarhlíð will provide coordinated services in one location, with an emphasis on safety, early intervention and professional follow-up.

Bryndísarhlíð will be located at Laufásvegur 81, on the grounds of the National University Hospital of Iceland, and is scheduled to formally open on 2 February 2027, which would have been Bryndís Klara’s 20th birthday.

The Fund also provides grants to projects that contribute to prevention and positive social development. Grants are awarded annually on Bryndís Klara’s birthday.

Riddarar kærleikans (The Knights of Love) is a community movement that emerged in the aftermath of Bryndís Klara’s death. It represents people who choose to show courage in their everyday interactions, stand with others, and oppose violence through kindness, empathy and responsibility.

Reykjavík Marathon and Culture Night 2026 🩷

Once again this year, a group of runners will take part in the Reykjavík Marathon on behalf of the Bryndís Klara Memorial Fund, raising donations to support the Fund’s work.

That means a great deal to us.

During Culture Night last year, an extraordinary sense of togetherness grew around the marathon, with around 350 runners wearing pink and running in memory of Bryndís Klara.

This year, the arrangements will be simpler and the Memorial Fund will not host a separate gathering or event connected with the marathon. Culture Night carries a deep and very special meaning for Bryndís’s family and those who were closest to her, and this year we intend to spend the day a little more quietly.

The pink shirts will, of course, still be with us. 🩷

We have received new pink shirts for those who are registered to run for the Bryndís Klara Memorial Fund. Runners who would like a shirt are encouraged to contact us through the Fund’s Facebook page and send us their name and shirt size.

When the race ends, the spirit of kindness does not have to

DJ Margeir and his friends are hosting MOMENT on Klapparstígur during Culture Night, from 12:30 PM until 10:00 PM.

MOMENT will be a celebration of dance, energy and kindness, and the event will also raise funds for the Bryndís Klara Memorial Fund.

We encourage our runners, friends of the Fund and everyone spending the day in central Reykjavík to stop by after the race, join the dancing and take part in the atmosphere of kindness and togetherness.

It means a great deal to us to see people take the initiative, create something positive, and help carry Bryndís’s memory and the values of the Fund forward into the wider community.

The Bryndís Klara Memorial Fund is registered on the Icelandic Tax Authority’s public-benefit register, and donations to the Fund may qualify for tax deductions under applicable rules.
