Reykur is a harm reduction service operated by Matthildur, for individuals experiencing substance use challenges who inhale opioids and stimulants. The service relies on contributions from individuals and companies, while government funding has been extremely limited and currently covers less than 10% of operating costs.

This service is life-saving for people with substance use challenges in Iceland, and for many, it is their first point of contact with support and a step toward recovery. To sustain the service, we are seeking individuals who are willing to run or walk on behalf of the organization and support this vital work.

About the Service

Reykur is a specialized harm reduction service for individuals experiencing substance use challenges who smoke opioids and stimulants. It is the only service of its kind in Iceland and was established in February 2025 in response to urgent needs.

Approximately 240 individuals have accessed the service, with over 1,100 service interactions to date. The service is provided free of charge and is accessible to people across the entire country. It focuses on creating a safe environment and offers harm reduction supplies, guidance on safer substance use, supportive conversations, structured follow-up, and connections to healthcare, social services, and addiction treatment.

Reykur provides outreach services twice a week in the capital area (via an unmarked vehicle) and offers telephone support on weekdays from 12:00–17:00. Individuals in rural areas receive services through phone support and the delivery of supplies by mail.
