The Icelandic Celiac Association works to improve the quality of life for people with celiac disease in Iceland, as well as for those who must follow a gluten free diet for other health reasons. The only treatment for celiac disease is a 100% gluten-free diet for life.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes symptoms when gluten is consumed. Classic symptoms include digestive issues such as bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Other symptoms may include headaches and brain fog, skin rashes, vitamin deficiencies, iron deficiency, and chronic fatigue - alongside nearly 300 other possible symptoms.
If left untreated, celiac disease can, among other complications, increase the risk of neurological disorders, vitamin deficiencies, osteoporosis, infertility, iron deficiency, and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. In children, it may also lead to slowed growth and poor weight gain, obesity and delayed puberty. Early diagnosis and treatment are therefore crucial to reduce the risk of nutrient deficiency, related health complications and early death.
It is estimated that around 1% of the global population has celiac disease, but about 75% of those affected remain undiagnosed.
The Icelandic Celiac Association works to raise awareness and provide education and support, increase rates of diagnosis, and improve the understanding of celiac disease both within the healthcare system and in society at large.
Thank you for running on behalf of the Icelandic Celiac Association - your support helps improve the lives of people who need to follow a gluten-free diet in Iceland!
